Dr. DiPette Recognized for Work in Hypertension Prevention and Management

Donald J. DiPette, MDCary, NC – The World Hypertension League (WHL) has awarded Donald J. DiPette, MD, the 2022 WHL Detlev Ganten Excellence Award in Hypertension and Global Health Implementation. Dr. DiPette received the award for his global collaboration and pursuit of the prevention and management of hypertension and leadership in implementing the HEARTS in the Americas model. The award was announced on World Hypertension Day, May 17, 2022. Dr. DiPette, CCME Foundation Chair and Board member, is Health Sciences Distinguished Professor for the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.

"It is quite an honor to receive this prestigious award," said Dr. DiPette. "I am also thrilled to see the new collaboration taking place between Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Southern Medical Association (SMA) and CCME. It is relationships like this one that will make the world a better place."

CCME, a partner with Health Quality Innovators, serves as the CMS Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) in South Carolina and is part of the Quality Innovation Network (QIN). CCME, in collaboration with SMA, is launching the HEARTS in South Carolina, a model with a series of live virtual events beginning Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at 8:00 a.m. Medical leaders from primary care practices, Federally Qualified Health Centers, specialty practices, and rural health clinics are encouraged to participate and join the HEARTS in Americas initiative.

"Dr. DiPette is a tireless advocate and medical leader in the fight against cardiovascular disease," said Steven Martin, CCME President and CEO. "The WHL Detlev Ganten Excellence Award is deserving recognition of Dr. DiPette's efforts to integrate global best practices for cardiovascular health in the United States, starting with South Carolina where stroke and heart disease are leading causes of death and long-term disability."

The WHL Detlev Ganten Excellence Award in Hypertension and Global Health Implementation was established in 2017 to honor former WHL President Detlev Ganten, MD, PhD, for his long and dedicated career in the prevention and treatment of hypertension, the pathophysiology and molecular biology of high blood pressure, pharmacology of antihypertensive drugs, and hormonal regulation of blood pressure, especially the renin‐angiotensin system.
